So you feel nervous right now because you have a presentation to give in two weeks' time or so? And worst of all, the presentation must be delivered in English!

Well, the first thing that you need to do is… be thankful!

Seriously!

That’s because this is a great opportunity for you to excel, both in your career and in your life.

But, yes, your feeling anxious is well understood. Thinking about giving a presentation itself already makes people tense, let alone having to give it in English.

But, have no worries, I am here to give three steps you can take to help you prepare your upcoming English presentation and deliver it with confidence.

Here are the three steps.

1. Yakinlah Anda bisa

Most of the time people fail in accomplishing important tasks not because of a lack of capability, but because of a lack of confidence.

Similarly, many people fail to accept the challenge to do a presentation in English not that they are incapable, but simply because they lack confidence.

So, believing that you can is the first step you need to take in accepting the task to do a presentation in English. This belief will take you to an open door of possibilities that you never knew existed.

Besides, the fact that the task is given to you shows that you are already capable of doing this. Your boss will not assign you if she doesn’t see that you are the right person to perform the task.

So, believe that you can, and you’re halfway there.

2. Tulis naskahnya

Write out the full script. From the opening until the closing. From the first word that you utter in your opening until the last word you say before you step down the stage.

One of the benefits of writing out the script is that you have a chance to choose the right words, the luxury that you don’t have when you do an impromptu presentation. When you write the script, you can always edit it whenever it doesn’t sound right to you.

Writing out the script can also help you to think more clearly about what you really want to say. During the writing process, you will likely come up with some fresh ideas that you never thought of before.

That way your script will be better and better. The words you use can more precisely represent the thoughts in your mind.

But you don’t need to memorize the whole script word for word. Memorize only the key points and elaborate them one by one. Memorizing the script can be effective for a 5–7 minute short presentation. But for a longer presentation, memorizing the script will put you at risk of going blank in the middle of the presentation.

3. Latihan, latihan, latihan

Practice makes perfect, they say. Even though you may not be 100% perfect in performing the presentation, but the practice will get you closer to that perfection.

Practice until you are fluent and comfortable when delivering it or, often said , until you internalize your material. The key is, the more, the better.

So take the time to practice whenever possible. It is good if you can get your friends or family members to act as your audience. Get them to sit at a table and listen to you delivering the presentation. When you have finished your presentation, they can give you feedback on what is already good and what can be improved.

However, they are not always available to help you to be your audience. There are times when you are ready to practice but they are not around. But this one shouldn’t be a limitation for you. The truth is you can always practice even without a real audience.

What you need to do is just stand and speak, whenever possible. When you are at home, you may stand in front of the sofa and chairs in the living room and start speaking. When you are at the office and your office has a dedicated meeting room, you can use it to practice and pretend that the audience is there too.

Those are the three things you can do to help you with your upcoming English presentation. Those are simple things, but if you act upon them properly, your upcoming English presentation shouldn’t be a problem for you anymore.
